• Snail Hunting

    March 25, 2009 - Comments (9)

After a busy day of meetings, my work had evidently just begun.  Lulu and I wound up going hunting.  What kind of hunting can you do in Franklin, TN?  It's a widely overlooked type of hunting, one I never knew existed until today.  Snail Hunting.  That's right, hunting for the great snail.  For some reason, while we were walking outside our house we noticed snails everywhere, maybe the rain brought them out?  I don't know. I'm not a snail-ologist.  And it gets weirder.  These snails were missing their trademark shell.  They were shell-less snails in the hundreds, no thousands.  I give you exhibit "A."

I know, I know, what an enlightening blog today.  Thanks Matthew.  Well, your welcome friend.  YOU ARE WELCOME.

Just so ya know, those are called slugs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slug Sounds like you two had fun. I miss those days, when snails, slugs, earthworms, etc. were so fascinating. : )

My Rosie used to look for Worm Families when I was gardening…
which are about as aesthetically pleasing as slugs, er, snails without shells! ; )
Genna would not go near a worm or slug or snail if you paid her. We finally got her to not scream and stand on furniture when she sees furry animals (this was embarrassing when at other people’s houses and Fluffy the cat would saunter by!), not sure we’re going to try to overcome the slimy garden creature response!
      Hooray for spring!

When I was LuLu’s age, my dad took me slug hunting, too. And we had “slug races” which was when he would put two slugs side by side and shout “Go.”
(I shall now leave out the part when he would shoot the loser with a bb gun and my mom would shout at him from the doorstep about getting slug guts on the side of the house and he and I would laugh.)

Friends of mine have a cousin that used to catch grasshoppers and such as a 7 year old (nearly 20 years ago). She was unique because most girls I new at that time were quite the opposite. Seemed like you and your daughter had fun hunting slugs.

We rarely had slugs before though, but my brother and i used to catch dragonflies when we were little. i remember them of different colors, brown, blue, green, red and orange. We try to catch as many as we can during the day and put them in a jar. And after we’re done, we go into our room and set them free. So they flew around inside our room. The next day, we open our windows and set them free.

I used to go snail hunting at my great grandma’s house in California. I’d put them all in a coffee can. It was one of my favorite things to do at Grandma Hilton’s house…
A couple years ago my mom finally told me that when we left my great grandma would step on the snails….. Never knew I was part of an active eradication. Oops.
