Step Away From The Cabin!
April 12, 2010 - Comments (6)A couple days away from the cabin this weekend. Had a show in S. Dakota, and this morning I am off to Dallas. Long flights, hours on the road, and brief stays in hotel rooms have all allowed me the much needed chance to decompress a bit.
That cabin has become such an intense place for me. Intense writing, reading stories. Even the solitude and time of prayer ses intense if that makes any sense. And whenever I am in intense situations, one of the first things that tends to blur is perspective. Have you ever been so far down inside a situation that you actually felt like you lost a true grip on what is really going on? I’m writing a song, but I’m so close to it that I’m not sire if it’s any good, or if it’s speaking what it needs to.
Well, how do you regain perspective? In my case, I imagine a police officer shouting through a megaphone “Step away from the Cabin, I repeat, step away from the Cabin!” being on the road has helped me step back, and gain renewed perspective on “The Story of Your Life.” Getting on stage and trying new songs out has helped me see what connects, and what doesn’t. Then I return to the cabin feeling refreshed (still tired…) but refreshed in my perspective on the task at hand.
I’m thinking, ‘what if I applied this same way of thinking to the rest of my life?’ Instead of letting words foolishly fly during a disagreement with my wife, what if I took a step back? Instead of just pursuing whatever opportunity pops up for the day and blindly chasing things through the day, what if I stepped back and asked God what He wants me to do?
And really, in all situations of our lives, we must remember to STEP AWAY from the world and step closer to God. That is where our perspective is refreshed and our hearts renewed.

Those are god words Matthew. Glad you’re getting some perspective re-focusing. The world would definitely be different if all of us (especially Christians) took that step back to re-focus on what the perspective is supposed to be.

Even God rested on the 7th day Matthew. Your words are true we all need to regain perspective from time to time. God calls us to focus on Him and to stay in His word, not the world and even when working on projects like yours that God has called you to do, we can all get lost in the process and miss what it is that God really wants from us. So getting out and gaining perspective in all situations is very wise and does not leave us to be the fools God talks all through Proverbs about. Remember even when you are feeling the stresses of the Cabin or your marriage or what ever life throughs at you always get on your knees and give God praise in that very moment.

I can definetly relate on how your feeling and you are right in saying to step away from the world and step closer to God. That is the only way that I’ve gotten through my intense or difficult situtions.
Try not to worry if your songs are going to be great or if your songs are speaking what they need. He’s already given you an album with amazing songs that are changing peoples lives daily. God will give you great perspective and give you the words/songs you need to make your 2nd album great. Continue to seek him and you will suceed in this journey!

Matthew,
No matter what you right, it’s going to the right song, the right words, and I believe everyone will benefit from your music because they are all words, to me, that are coming from God. That’s how I feel about your songs, they speak to me, through you, from God.
